Does an outdoor EV charger need a cover?
Many home EV chargers are designed for outdoor installation, but that does not make extra shielding pointless. An outdoor EV charger cover can reduce direct exposure to rain, strong sunlight, snow, dirt and minor knocks, especially on open driveways and exposed house walls.
A cover does not replace the charger IP rating
The wallbox must still be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions and local electrical requirements. A cover is an additional external shield; it does not change the charger's IP rating.
When a cover is most useful
Extra shielding is particularly useful where the charger faces wind-driven rain, receives many hours of direct sun, sits in an uncovered parking area or is regularly exposed to leaves and road dirt.
Weather protection and a tidier charging point
A top-and-side cover can create a more sheltered zone and make the charging installation look more integrated with the building.
