Wallbox in rain, snow and ice: choosing additional shelter

Your outdoor wallbox is a charging point you use in wet and wintry weather too. Sheltering exposed surfaces and giving the cable a proper place means planning for daily use throughout the year.

Choose protection for your charging point

Outdoor-rated equipment can also have shelter

The charger must suit its environment and be installed according to its manual. A cover provides physical shielding in the areas it covers. The charger retains the water and dust protection rating declared by its manufacturer. You can plan shelter before a problem occurs.

Snow and ice: consider access as well

In a Reddit discussion about charging in cold climates, owners describe cables, snow and ice. Some mention build-up near the vehicle inlet; others report normal outdoor operation. These are personal accounts, not comparative tests of covers.

A wallbox cover may shelter the charging point and a connector stored inside the covered area. It does not shelter the car’s inlet while the cable is plugged into the vehicle. An open cover is not an anti-freeze system and cannot prevent all icing.

Give the connector a designated place

Tesla recommends docking the charging handle to reduce unnecessary exposure to moisture and contamination. Source: North American Universal Wall Connector instructions.

Use the storage arrangement specified for your charger. Check that the cable reaches the vehicle without tension and that the connector is not left on the ground. Remove leaves and deposits according to the cover’s care instructions rather than allowing material to accumulate.

Where do you need shielding?

  • Top and sides: Wallbox Cover, with an open front.
  • Front as well: Crystal Shell, with upper and front shielding and open sides.
  • Space for wiring: Cover Plus, with a 6 cm rear compartment.
  • Beside the parking space: compare Stand and Vela for freestanding installation; Vela includes an overhead cover.

Make the choice before winter

Observe the direction of rain, any roof above that may shed snow and the connector’s resting position. Wind-driven snow can reach open areas, so location and orientation matter. Do not assume an undeclared snow-load capacity or vehicle-impact protection.

Measure the complete installation, including the inserted plug, and maintain access to controls and openings. Add shelter to an existing charger or plan it with the initial installation.
